Backpack

Young
children like almost any craft with their name involved! Here is a simple
and fun way to personalise their backpacks and satchels as well as helping
them to identify them quickly and easily. You will need:
Card (white or pale coloured)
Colouring pencils/pens
Hole punch
Key ring attachment or ribbon First make an outline:
First you
will need to draw an outline of your child's name onto the card (older
kids can or course do this themselves). Make it big and chunky to give
them plenty of room to colour it in. If you prefer, you can easily make
an outline using Word. Choose a suitable font (we like Comic Sans) and
type in the name in big letters. Then select the name, choose
"format" and then "font". Select the
"outline" box. This is an excellent trick with lots of potential
for children learning to form letters and numbers (see Creating your own
worksheets). Second - get the kids to colour it in:
Give the
children some colouring pens and let them colour in their names. Older
kids could create a different pattern in each letter. Younger kids should
try to stay within the lines! Third - cut out the name:
When
the colouring is completed, cut out the name leaving a small border all
around, and at least an inch before the first letter (this is where you
need to punch a hole). If you wish you can write address and contact
details on the back of the name. Fourth - laminate:
You can
either cold laminate (you can buy laminating sheets from an office supply
company or stationery shop) or take the tag to be laminated in a machine.
The latter option is more permanent! When the laminating is done, re-punch
the hole and use a key ring or ribbon to attach the tag to the satchel or
backpack. Make sure that you round off the corners of the tag so that they
are nice and smooth.
