"Oh the thinks you can think up if only you try!" Theodore Geisel
Theodore Suess
Geisel, better known as Dr Seuss, was born in 1904 in Springfield,
Massachusetts, USA. After studying at Dartmouth College (in the USA)
and Oxford University (in the UK) he started work in advertising as a
cartoonist.
He wrote his
first children’s book, And To Think I Saw It On Mullberry Street, in
1937 but was rejected by 27 publishers before finally going to
print. His big break in children’s literature came when he was asked to
write a book with a limited vocabulary for beginner readers: this
resulted in The Cat In The Hat, his most famous book, which was made
into a film in 2003.
At the time of
his death in 1991 he had written and illustrated 44 children’s books,
including Green Eggs and Ham (apparently written after a wager that he
could not write a book with a vocabulary of only 50 words), Fox in
Socks, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas (another movie success, this
was the highest grossing movie in the US in the year 2000).
Dr Seuss won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, as well as
three Academy Awards.
