Children use their imagination to create animals, monsters or exotic
creatures from a selection of fruit and vegetables. This works as a quiet
activity as well as an unusual party game.
Age: 5+
How to play (on your own):
Give the children a selection of fruit and vegetables - for
example grapes, lemons, carrots, peppers, kiwi fruit, oranges, potatoes of all
shapes and sizes - as well as a handful of toothpicks. Ask them to create their
own animal or creature.
How to play (party game):
Pass around slips of paper containing a number and the name of
some animal. Each child must keep secret what his animal is to be.
Prepare a basket of vegetables suitable for the occasion and let the kids choose
what they need to make their animals. Provide plenty of toothpicks to join the
fruit and vegetables together, as well as to use for the legs, ears and tails.
You can also provide buttons, beads, pipe cleaners etc as appropriate.
Allow five minutes for constructing the creatures.
Then collect the creatures together, pinning a number corresponding to the one
on the slip to its back, and arrange the "show" on a table.
Give each child a pencil and a piece of paper and ask them to write down the
numbers and what they think each animal is!
A prize can be given to the one who has guessed the greatest number
correctly.
