Diary Of A New Mum Week 10 - Poos, Snooze and Vibro-Chairs

Poos, Snooze, and Vibro-chairs

You’ll be pleased to know that I’m plugging on with the routine still, although Jessica-Ann clearly hasn’t read the book and doesn’t seem to know when she’s meant to be asleep and when she’s meant to be awake!

Paul and I talk about poo at lot (Jess’s, not ours). It usually goes like this, ‘Guess what, Jess did a massive poo today and it was a sticky green one, not a yellow grainy one!’ ‘No, really? How long had it been since her last poo?’ (I consult my diary) ‘Two days. And I’ve changed the last three poo nappies so it’s your turn next!’

How can such a small, sweet, angelic-faced little beauty produce such stinky stools? It doesn’t seem possible. We have to open the back door when we change her or we’d suffocate! And those sticky green ones – almost impossible to scrape off her bum. Okay, so you don’t really want to know about Jessica-Ann’s dirty diapers, but it’s all part of being a parent…

The great news this week is that Jess is sleeping longer through the night. The earliest she’s woken up is 6.30am, which is a huge improvement on five, or even four, o’clock. I’m convinced this is because I’m getting her up at seven every day now, and her sleeping patterns are becoming more regulated. The ultimate goal – going down at seven in the evening and waking up at seven in the morning – seems a long way off, but every day it gets better and better. Already I’m looking back in my diary and seeing how far we’ve come from those 3-hourly feeds and no sleep!

Another boost to our arsenal of sleep tools is the arrival of a new bouncer for Jess – with a built-in vibrating action. Really! It’s fantastic, and Jess loves it. My friend, Carla, mother of four-month-old Harry, has one and we tried it last week. The vibrations calmed her down in the middle of a crying session and I knew I had to have one. Carla said it was the only way they ever managed to get through a meal when Harry was tiny – I said thanks a lot for not telling me about it sooner!

So how am I doing? Thanks for asking. I’m okay, I think. Had my hair cut yesterday and it felt strange, sitting in a salon, chatting to the stylist who wanted to know all about Jessica-Ann. I guess it’s the most normal thing I’ve done in a while – and the first thing I’ve done in months that’s been just for me. But I didn’t like sitting in front of a mirror much – they had these full-length ones and I ask you: Who looks good in front of a mirror when they’re sitting down? Not a woman who’s just had a baby, that’s for sure!
