Diary Of A New Mum -
Week 11
Grandparents
This week we did a crazy thing – we left
Jessica-Ann with my mom overnight! My mom had offered to have her stay over so
that Paul and I could get a decent night’s sleep and, most importantly, a lie
in. I think she wanted us to have some ‘quality time’ together, which is so
sweet. I wasn’t sure if we were ready to let Jess out of our sights just yet,
but in the end I agreed.
We packed the car with all her stuff –
pram, bottles, spare bottles, clothes, more clothes, nappies, spare nappies,
more nappies just in case – and headed over to my mom’s house. We timed it so
Jess was ready for her evening feed, and she usually goes down straight after
this, albeit in her pram! Mum was brilliant, capable and calm, and she didn’t
bat an eye when I handed her my detailed instructions which ran on for about
three pages!
Leaving Jess behind was really, really
hard. I had to be forcibly dragged away from her. I knew my mom would take
fantastic care of her and all, it wasn’t that I was worried. She’s my baby.
She’s part of my body. And leaving in the care of another person (even her dad!)
is still extremely difficult.
I recovered pretty quickly though. A
very large glass of wine in the restaurant we stopped at helped, as did a nice
meal, more wine, and a long, long, long sleep. The next morning Paul and I did
some chores and went shopping – but the house felt so strange without
Jessica-Ann. When I woke up she was the first thing I thought of, and I missed
her. We picked her up just after lunch. Of course, she was absolutely fine,
probably having been spoiled rotten by her nana, and she completely ignored me!
There’s gratitude for you.
I never gave much thought to
grandparents before I had a baby. Jess is lucky to have three sets of
grandparents; two on my side, one on Paul’s. All of them dote on her, and I’m
sure they’ll each have different relationships with her as she grows up. My own
granny died a few weeks before Jess was born (and Paul’s died just after), and
neither of them got to see Jess which is a real shame. Although my granny, at
104, was already a great-grandmother five times over! She was an amazing, feisty
woman.
When Jess is older I’ll be able to tell
her lots of stories about her great-grandma – and her other great-grandparents
who aren’t with us anymore – but I don’t think I’ll tell her how my granny used
to give my sister and me a drop of Sherry when we were about six-years-old! She
might want to try it too!
