Diary Of A New Mum -
Week 13
More Jabs
Jessica-Ann had her second lot of
injections on Tuesday. Remember I said not to go for your baby’s injections on
your own? Why oh why did I not follow my own advice?
Paul was working on Tuesday, and as he’s
had so much time off for Jess and me I didn’t have the heart to ask him not to
go in again. He’s got a new boss at work and while she’s very nice and all, he
doesn’t want to rock the boat – he’s a dad now, he says, and has to be the
provider. Can’t argue with that, so off I went to the surgery this morning, Jess
all dressed up in pink looking pretty as a picture.
She’s got to the stage now where she is
really engaging with people – she’s great at eye-contact and big, heart-warming
smiles. In the waiting room she was smiling away at two old ladies like she
didn’t have a care in the world. I felt so cruel, knowing what was to come. I
took her into the surgery and Jess smiled at the nurses, who commented on how
pretty she was. Jess beamed some more.
As the nurse came towards her with the
needle in her hand my heart just broke. Jess was all innocent wide eyes and
happy gurgles – until the needle went in and then her voice broke into the most
terrible wail. It was like she was saying, ‘Why? Why! I’ve been so good and so
happy, how could you do this to me?’
I was upset all day after that. And felt
irrationally annoyed that Paul hadn’t come with me. I know that if I’d really
asked him, told him how much I needed him there, he would have been happy to
come. But I didn’t want to be a pain. Serves me right!
Meanwhile Jessica-Ann was out of sorts
all day. I’d given her baby paracetamol, as directed, half an hour before her
jabs, but this didn’t seem to have helped much. She was fractious and crying, I
was fractious and crying, and when Paul got home at five (after a desperate text
from me) he found me pacing up and down with Jess in my arms – the only way I
could calm her. It was horrible.
Jess finally zonked out at seven
o’clock. She was pretty out of it the next day too. I don’t know what they put
in these injections (as a responsible parent I suppose I probably should), but
they don’t seem to do her much good in the short-term. Just hope it will be
worth it in the long-term. Her next lot are in another four weeks. What did I
say? DO NOT take your baby to get his/her injections done on your own!
