Diary Of A New Mum -
Week 15
Holding Things And Squealing
Jessica-Ann has moved on to the next
stage in her routine this week, which is only slightly different from before and
involves sleeping less in the day and going a little longer between certain
feeds. Her mid-morning feed is the one she’s most hungry for – which is funny, I
would have thought she’d be most hungry first thing in the morning. I know I
am.
This week Jess started doing two new
things: holding her toys in both hands, and squealing in the most ear-splitting
way you can imagine! Honestly, it sounds like it could shatter glass. Listening
to her makes my throat hurt – she seems to rasp away with her vocal chords,
trying so hard to make a sound. I tell her it’s a beautiful tune. I’m lying.
When she grabbed for her toys only a few
weeks ago it was more by luck than judgment if she managed to get hold of
anything. Now, though, she’s got it sorted. Reaches across the mat with one
hand, picks up her monkey-toy by its leg, then passes it back to her other hand
and promptly tries to tear it limb from limb. Such a sweet little thing. Monkey
has a pained expression on his face that I’m sure wasn’t there before…
The whole development thing is
fascinating. I’ll never forget the first time she smiled at Paul and me when we
woke her in the morning. It was such a beautiful moment. One minute she didn’t
really smile (unless she was passing gas), the next minute there she is lighting
up the room. And now, one minute she can’t hold anything and just lies there on
her play-mat looking helpless, the next minute she’s grabbing her toys like
she’s been doing it forever.
I guess it will be like that for every
stage she goes through, and I plan to make a real effort to never take anything
for granted and to note all the changes as they happen. Imagine the first time
she speaks, her first steps, her first tantrum (not looking forward to this one
quite so much).
Still, not wanting to rush her through
her stages or anything but I’m eager for the squealing to be replaced by
something a little softer on the ears. She hit ten decibels the other day – I’m
not joking. And if you’re not in the room with her and can’t see her happy
little face, you’d swear she was being tortured. Goodness knows what our
neighbors think we’re doing to her. I wouldn’t be surprised to find Social
Services on my doorstep any day now…
