Diary Of A New Mum - Week 22

Plastic Fantastic

The thing about baby toys is – they are so ugly! And they take up so much room. Once upon a time there lived a couple called Monica and Paul, who took a pretty minimalist approach to interior design. Then Jessica-Ann arrived. The rest, as they say, is history…

It was with great trepidation that we awaited the arrival of Jess’s new toy this week. I say toy – it’s actually an ‘activity station’; a kind of plastic donut with a seat in the middle and various flashing lights and noises around the edge. It also enables her to bounce on her little legs, thus strengthening them apparently. Now, we didn’t set out to get her this monstrosity – it was offered to us by a friend whose own baby has outgrown it. She swore her baby loved the thing. Who were we to argue?

Our lounge isn’t huge. In it we manage to fit a sofa, a chair and a TV (for us), a play-gym, a bouncer, a toy box and a baby-seat (for Jess). There was barely room to swing a cat before the plastic donut turned up! Now we can’t move for bits of baby trapping, and we can’t hear ourselves think for the sound of bells and squeaks and tinny music.

Oh, I don’t mind really. Needless to say, Jessica-Ann loves it to bits. She half-sits, half-slumps in the chair and bashes away at the dials and buttons with relish. Bless her. And when she manages to make a noise, we clap our hands and tell her well done – you should see the look of joy on her face. It’s enough to brighten up anyone’s day. At least when she starts crawling I won’t have to worry about her crawling far – there is no room to move in our lounge anyway.

One thing I did learn this week is to keep my opinions to myself when talking to other moms (thank goodness for my diary). I was telling them about the plastic fantastic – disparagingly, of course – when one of the moms said to another, ‘Isn’t that like the one you’ve got, Jean?’ I wanted to crawl away and hide. Quickly trying to back track, I only made things worse, and managed to offend just about everyone by the end of the coffee morning. Shut up, Monica!

Best moment of the week: Watching Jessica-Ann eating. Weaning is going really well, and Jess has taken to it brilliantly. So far there is nothing she doesn’t like, she just opens her mouth really wide and gobbles it all up. Paul is going to bring a video camera home from work so we can record her being fed. In a few years when she’s throwing food around the kitchen and criticizing my cooking it will probably be hard to believe she was ever this cute!
