Diary Of A New Mum - Week 7
Green Light Says Go!
Jessica-Ann and I had our six-week check
this week, and mother and baby are both fine. Jess weighs 9 pounds and 7 ½
ounces, which isn’t as much as I’d hoped but she’s grown in length instead – she
really is quite long. She’s asleep on her mat again now – she fell asleep while
I was winding her over my shoulder and would not be roused! So much for the
routine I was trying to get her into. Oh well, there’s always next week.
I was surprised that the doctor didn’t
actually check me over at all. She just asked lots of questions and that was
that. So I guess I’m fine to start doing all those things I’ve been putting off
until my six-week check, like exercise, housework, ironing…
It’s getting increasingly difficult for
me to find time to write my diary. Here is a list of all the other things I
haven’t had time to do for weeks (on top of housework and ironing, of course):
get my hair cut, phone anyone, send out thank you cards for Jess’s gifts, pelvic
floor exercises (don’t make me laugh), put moisturizer on, have nooky with my
husband (!), tidy up, look at our accounts, go shopping for clothes that fit me,
wash any clothes, cook.
But, on the other hand, I have a happy,
contented, healthy baby. I know I go on and on about it, but she really is very
beautiful. We went to the supermarket again today and I got a trolley with a
dodgy wheel. Combined with a car-seat on top, the trolley was virtually
impossible to steer, and I kept bashing into people. They’d turn around, faces
like thunder, ready to have a go at the selfish shopper who’d scraped all the
skin off their ankles, only to be greeted with Jess’s precious little face, and
then they’d melt and go all gooey. This is a trick I’ll have to use often!
I have decided to remove health visitors
from my list of persona non grata. Last week a health visitor called Sam
recommended that we try Colief for Jess’s colic. Colief is drops that you put
into their milk, and it works by breaking down the proteins in the milk to make
it easier for young babies to digest. (Don’t quote me on the technical details –
I’m not a doctor, just a mum.)
Guess what – it works! We were dubious,
after weeks and weeks of squirting Infacol into Jess’s un-obliging mouth, but
this literally worked within a day of using it. Oh joy! No more colic. It sounds
too good to be true – and perhaps it will be. All I know is, we’ve had a few
nights with no screaming, and that can’t be bad.
Crazy moment: Went to a ‘baby signing’
class. Apparently, teaching babies (even babies of only seven weeks old) to
‘sign’ helps them communicate and relieves their frustration. Hmm. Okay. Except,
frustration is an evolutionary tool which encourages babies to talk! I learnt
the signs for Monkey and Plane (not sure how useful these were meant to be).
Jess slept through the whole thing.
