Diwali Crafts for Kids

Diwali is a joyful celebration and many of its symbols - candles and
lights, rangoli, flowers and fireworks - make ideal subjects for exploration
with your children through crafts such as these below.

Rangoli
Lots NEW!
(colourful geometric designs created near the entrance of the house to
welcome guests to the home)

Diwali door hanging
At Diwali it is traditional to hang embroidered door hangings (torans) above
doorways to welcome visitors and hopefully the Goddess of Fortune,
Lakshmi, to your home. Make your own
simple version from paper with the help of our printables.
Diyas (clay lamps) for Diwali
Diyas are little clay lamps lit at Diwali. They can be decorated with
paint or have flower petals pressed into the clay. They are usually lit by a
cotton wick in some ghee, but we have used tea lights to make our Diyas
easier and safer for children.

Diya craft 1
This is a simple clay craft idea which children enjoy because it
is fast and the results can be used quickly! You could of course adapt this
idea to give as a gift.

Diya craft 2 (tea light holder)
Using a terracotta pot or ramekin makes this a very quick and
easy craft, but you can really go to town with your decorations! It makes a
perfect little present, too.

Flower garland
At Diwali it is customary in some areas of India to wear a necklace made
from fresh flowers. Why not try our paper one instead?

Painted candle craft
We thought this candle craft was perfect for Diwali, the festival of lights
- but of course you could adapt the craft for Christmas and Halloween, or to
give as a gift, too.
