Gin Rummy

Play gin rummy online against the computer. It's a great way for kids to learn the game and hone their rummy skills!

Gin rummy is played by 2 players (in this case you and the computer). Each player is dealt 10 cards, then one card is placed face up in the middle of the table to form a discard pile and the rest of the pack is put face down to form a stock pile. On your go you start by taking a card, choosing between the top card or the discard pile or the stock pile. Form melds in your hand (see below) and then discard a card from your hand.

A meld is 3 or 4 cards of the same rank or of the same suit in sequence. One card cannot belong to two melds. Any cards not in a meld are deadwood cards and count against you if you lose (Ace 1 point, 2 has 2 points, and so on with Jack, Queen and King 10 points). The object of gin rummy is to either go out - "Gin" - or to reduce your deadwood points. Instructions are continued below the game...

After discarding a card, a player can knock if his deadwood points are less than or equal to 10. The other player then has a chance to lay off his deadwood cards if they can form melds with the knocking player's melds. After that, if the knocking player's deadwood points are less than the other player's, then he is awarded a score equal to the difference in deadwood points. But if the other player has less deadwood points, then the other player gets 25 plus the difference in deadwood points. If the knocking player has no deadwood then the other player is not allowed to lay off, and the knocking player is awarded an extra 25 points. And if all the 11 cards in a player's hand form valid melds, then he can knock before discarding a card and he is awarded an extra 6 points. If there are only 2 cards remaining in the stock pile, then the game ends in a draw. The match ends when a player has accumulated 100 points. And don't worry - the computer will do all the scoring for you!
