Halloween finger puppets

Witch and ghost finger puppet.gif (24830 bytes) Pumpkin and cat finger puppet.gif (25815 bytes)

These felt finger puppets are fun to make - and they will give your kids hours of fun when they are finished, as they make up their own Halloween stories with them.

Printable pattern

You will need:

- Scraps of felt in black, grey, pink or flesh, orange, white and green (alternatively use craft foam in the same colours)
- Scraps of brown wool, straw or brown felt for witch's hair
- Needle and thread (or white glue)
- Embroidery cotton (or coloured markers)
- Sequin or stars to decorate witch's hat and dress.

Print out the pattern and check to see that the body piece is the right size for a finger puppet. You may need to set your printer margins to zero and turn off your headers and footers to gain more space (File, Page Setup).

You may want to print out these images to help you put the puppets together.

The Ghost
Start by making the ghost puppet, which is much the easiest! Using the printed pattern, cut out two ghost shapes of white felt or craft foam. Sew or stick the two pieces together around the curved edges, leaving the straight edge open at the bottom open. Either use embroidery thread or marker pens to add his face. That's it!

The Cat
Cut two body pieces out of black or grey, and one cat face out of the same colour. Sew or stick the two pieces together around the curved edges, leaving the straight edge open at the bottom. Use embroidery thread or marker pens to make the face. If embroidering, use French knots for the eyes (green looks great), satin stitch for the nose, and running stitch for the mouth and whiskers. Attach to the body with glue or stitching.

The Pumpkin
Cut two body pieces out of green felt or foam, and assemble as above. Cut the pumpkin face out of orange felt. Either embroider the features in yellow or black satin stitch, or cut scraps out coloured card, felt or foam and stick onto his face. Add a little green stalk. Attach the head to the body as above.

The Witch
Cut two body pieces out of grey or black felt or foam and assemble as above. Cut her face out of pink or flesh-colour - or even grey or pale green! Add the features with embroidery stitches or marker pens. Make the witch's hair with whatever you have to hand - perhaps brown wool (yarn), or string. Strands of wire wool can look great too.

Stick or sew the head to the body and add the hat. If you like you can decorate her dress and hat with sequins or stars. You could even make a little broomstick with twigs and string and sew or stick it to the witch so that she is not without her favourite means of transport!
