Harry Potter Coins

Many thanks to Dawne, who created
these wonderful
printable Harry Potter coins and provided lots of ideas for using them!
Galleons
Sickles
Knuts
Practice your maths!
Get the kids to practice converting this very complicated currency! With
29 knuts in 1 sickle, and 17 sickles in 1 galleon, this should keep
them occupied for a while!
Quiz night
Have a quiz night and award coins for correct answers. Then use the coins
to exchange for Harry Potter prizes (there are lots of ideas for prizes in
the links on our main Harry Potter page)
Create a "token economy"
This HP money could be used as a "token economy" in the home for
fun and maths practice. Vacuuming could earn 2 sickles while taking out
the rubbish could be one knut, and so on. Kids would have to do
conversions to "buy" things from mom. For example:
3 galleons buys a friend over for lunch
1 galleon buys 1 hour later bedtime on a weekend
5 sickles means you can choose pudding tonight!
Create your own Gringotts branch
Put up a corkboard and decorate in a Harry Potter theme. Each child can
have their own "account" - this being an envelope tacked onto
the corkboard. Be sure the values are posted clearly (29 knuts to a
sickle, 17 sickles to a galleon). How about adding the poem from chapter 5 of Harry
Potter and the Philosopher's stone - about not trying to break into
Gringotts!
Make a Gringotts game!
Cut out the various coins and use them (or plain white stickers) on a
large piece of cardboard or a file folder to make the "path" for
a game board. You might want to decorate the game board with Harry Potter
images (find some in the links section of the main Harry
Potter page). Each take the part of a character from the books and use
playing pieces and a die to race around the board. Add cards with
questions on them (on Harry Potter or any other subject) which have to be
answered before you can move your piece. Perhaps extra coins could be
awarded for a correct answer, or you could create special places on the
board which award or subtract coins ("buy too many chocolate frogs -
lose 3 sickles" and so on).
