James GarfieldJames Garfield (1831-81) was the 20th President of the United States, serving for 200 days in 1881.

Garfield was a long-serving politician who had also served as a Major-General in the American Civil War. He was a strong advocate of reform and civil rights but was assassinated after less than a year in office. He was the second President to be assassinated while in office (Lincoln was the first).
