picture on the poster) is funny? What does that tell us?
What is a lie?
Have you ever told a lie which has spread very quickly? Did you mean it
to spread?
Have you ever passed on some information which you suspected might be a
lie? How did it make you feel?
What do you think you should do if you are told something which could be
a lie?
What is gossip? Is gossip always lies? If you hear some gossip
which you know to be true, does that mean it is alright to tell other
people?
Has somebody ever spread a lie about you? How did it make you feel?
What can you do if somebody spreads a lie about you, or tells a lie
about someone you know?
Can telling lies by fun (see Activity Ideas below)? How do you
distinguish between a "fun" lie and a hurtful lie?
Activity Ideas
Play Chinese whispers.
Talk about the sort of lies children tell about other children. Think
about why people tell lies, and how you can stop lies spreading.
Think up a short, catchy phrase which sums up the message of our poster,
and make your own poster to display at school or at home.
Practise telling funny lies! "Did you hear that Angela dyed her hair
green last week?" "Mrs Smith found some buried treasure in her front garden
yesterday!" Notice how easily some of these "stories" could be thought to be
true if they were overheard.
What can you learn about Sir Winston Churchill? Perhaps you could write
a short biography on one of our notebooking pages (below).
Churchill was not only a brilliant politician and war-time leader, but
he is known as one of the greatest orators of the 20th Century. What is an
orator?
Write your own short speech about something that is happening today, or
something that you feel passionate about. Give your speech to an audience -
your family or class - and see if you can excite them or arouse their
interest in the same way that Churchill could. Remember that Churchill use
to practise his speeches for hours to make them perfect!
What stories have been told in history that have subsequently been
proven to be lies? Do you think that people believed the lies at the time?
Why do you think lies spread so quickly? Can you stop it happening?
