London Museums for Kids
There are well over 200 museums in London, so even if you live in the
city visiting them all would be a major challenge! However, many of the
London museums now have wonderful online resources, so if you are
planning a visit to the capital why not start here! And if you are not
able to visit London, you can take a virtual tour with our guide to the
best of these online resources.
A useful place to start when planning a visit, this site contains
visitor information for most London museums.
Bank of England Museum
Offers activity sheets to print as well as online tours, quizzes and jigsaws.
British Museum
Includes a fascinating database of museum artefacts, as well as online games and details of family events.
British Postal Museum
Lots of things to print and do for teachers, families and children. A wonderful educational resource.
Design Museum
Excellent online resource looking at many aspects of design, aimed at teachers and students.
HMS Belfast
An interactive online tour full of fascinating information about this WW2 cruiser
Horniman Museum
Click through schools for child-specific activities, the study packs,
while designed for school visits, could be used at other times. The
interactive resource was not up when I wrote this but based on the
quality of the site as a whole I expect good things.
Imperial War Museum
While the museum itself is kid friendly, the website is not. However,
lots of information can be found about items in their collections and
there are special online exhibitions which may interest older children.
London Transport Museum
Includes paper models of a Hackney Carriage and a Routemaster bus to
print, colour and assemble as well as online games.
Museum of London
Lots of online games, widely varying in quality but worth a look.
Natural History Museum
One of my kids favourite places and one of their favourite websites. So
much to see and do here, webcams, games, wallpapers, quizzes…and don’t
forget the dinosaurs!
RAF Museum
Lots of printable worksheets and teachers resource packs, aimed at
supporting school visits but full of interesting facts and could be
adapted for use at home.
Science Museum
Explore museum artefacts online and lots of games (although I found a
few quite difficult!)
Shakespeare’s Globe Exhibition
One for older children, but an interesting look at the workings of a theatre.
Victoria and Albert
Not an inspiring layout, but worth a delve as there are lots of
treasures to be found. We particularly like the Design your Own Coat of Arms.
Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood
Wonderful resource from online games and activities to toys to print and
make and historical costume colouring pages.
National Gallery
View the complete collection online and learn about the history of the
Gallery. Follow the learn link for teachers resources.
Tate Britain
Games, craft ideas, ecards, online galleries…too much to list, a fantastic site.
