Make Bunting!

Making bunting is fun for all ages and you can use many different types of material and involve children of all ages - even the very youngest! Choose your colours to suit the occasion - perhaps to tie in with your birthday party decorations, or in patriotic colours for a special event.

Bunting can be made in all sizes - from very tiny for dolls houses, to full-sized for birthday party decorations. Use our bunting template as a guide and draw up your own triangles to the correct size.

Simplest Bunting:

Little children can cut simple triangles out of different-coloured paper and use sticky-tack to attach. You can use plain craft paper, wrapping paper (you can get a lot of triangles out of one sheet of gift wrap!) or print out some of our scrapbook paper designs. Great practice for fine motor skills, recognising shapes and repeating patterns too!

Strung Bunting:
Use our bunting template to cut triangles out of different-coloured paper. On the wrong side of the paper, paint the rectangular shape with white glue (PVA), then either fold directly over a length of string or (our preferred method), roll the paper around a length of plastic drinking straw. The straw adds stability to the flag and then allows even the youngest children to thread the flags onto string.

Waterproof bunting:
You can make waterproof bunting by cutting up strong plastic bags or plastic fabric and oilcloth (sold for tablecloths).

Fabric Bunting:
You can make fabulous fabric bunting using scraps of left-over fabric or cheap cotton sheeting - a small amount goes a long way if you cut it carefully. For longer lasting bunting use pinking shears to cut out your triangles, then either use the drinking straw method described above or sew a simple channel in the top of each flag.

Patriotic (flag) bunting:
Print out or photocopy a selection of rectangular flags from your chosen country - sometimes you can buy packs of flags in party shops. Attach to string as above.
