Weird And Wonderful Breastfeeding Products

Weird and wonderful breastfeeding products

We all know about breast pumps and breastfeeding bras – but what about those weird and wonderful products out there that claim to help us do everything from use our minds to increase milk production to breastfeed adopted babies (when not lactating!)

Our Best "Weird and Wonderful Breastfeeding Products" awards go to the following:

#5 - Breastfeeding CD

At number five is More Mama’s Milk breastfeeding CD. This product claims to help at-home or working mothers increase their breast milk supply. How? Simply by listening to the guided relaxations which will help you to “fully appreciate this intimate time with your angel baby”. So sweet.

Could it work?
Possibly. A mother who is more relaxed could, in theory, be better equipped to produce more milk, as stress is certainly known to be an inhibitor.

#4 - Baby Lambskin

Coming in at number four, this is like a sheepskin rug but tiny. An actual baby sheepskin rug for your baby! Apparently “Lambskins have been used for centuries to calm and soothe babies.” The theory is that children form an attachment to their lambskin, which “makes various transitions in their life easier, for example settling at nursery or grannies for the first time.”  The literature for the baby lambskin also claims that it can help premature babies to gain weight more quickly. How it does this we are not sure.

Could it work?
There seems no reason why a lambskin in particular would have more of a soothing effect on a baby than any piece of soft cloth or toy he has formed an attachment to.

#3 - Booby-Tubes

Booby-Tubes are gel filled pads which go in your bra and can be either warmed up to be hot or put into the fridge to keep cold. The idea is a kind of ‘cure all’ product, which can both stimulate your breasts to produce milk or be used to soothe sore nipples. This sounds like a great idea – in theory. The reality is that most new moms have no chance of fitting a gel filled pad into their already-bursting-at-the-seams bras – gel-filled bras are for the less well endowed, surely!

Could they work?
Most certainly, even if they are not very practical.

#2 - Feeding Slings

Feeding slings make it to number two in our awards because they promote the idea that now you can’t even sit down and rest when you’re feeding! Who got the idea that women need to keep up with the housework and should simply pop hungry baby in a pouch and get on with it? This is not right! Nursing mothers need their rest too, and often the time they spend feeding their babies is the only chance they have to get it.

Could they work?
Of course, but they should still be resigned to the trash.

#1 - Goats Rue

And at number one the weirdest breastfeeding product of all. A herb that can actually produce breast milk in a non-lactating woman, enabling her to successfully breastfeed an adopted baby. This is great! If it works…

Could it work?
There seems to be no evidence (other than anecdotal) or research to prove that these herbs have any effect at all.
