World Book Day
World Book Day is recognised by over 100 countries around the world. It will
be celebrated on 5th March 2009 and its purpose is to encourage reading and a
love of books in children. Your child's school may well be holding a World Book
Day event or fancy dress day, but it is also a great excuse to get involved at
home. We've pulled together all of our Books and Reading resources here, and
added a few new ones, to get you started - and we've also found some great sites
on the internet for even more resources.
Encouraging Reading
Encouraging your child to read a wide variety of books is
probably the best education you can give them - but sometimes it seems an uphill
struggle! We have put together a collection of tips and tricks to encourage
reading which may give you some inspiration...

Library chart

When my kids were little, they put a colourful sticker on one of these sticker
charts every time they finished a book (from school, library or home). When the
sticker chart was full, we had a special trip to our favourite children's book
shop to choose one or two new ones!

Books with Children
One of my first memories of childhood is that of my
mother reading Dr. Seuss books to me in a big brown recliner in our
living room. That memory brings with it sounds and smells and a general
feeling of safety and comfort that never fades, even after all these
years.
If You'd Like
to Know Why Reading Matters
We're always telling children that books and reading are good for
them, but have we ever really thought about why that's true?
