In this guest post, Sarah B explores some lovely ways to capture holiday memories using printables from Activity Village.

Out and About with our Scavenger Hunts

Capturing Holiday Memories

By Sarah B

Last year, we went to Snowdonia on holiday and, despite their young age, the older two children remember an awful lot of that holiday. This year we went north to a small village close to Stirling. I was keen to embrace Daniel’s recently discovered love of drawing and colouring in and wanted to create a holiday journal with them.

We started by filling in a holiday planning sheet that outlined where we were going and how we were getting there – this certainly helped to get the children in the holiday spirit and ramped up the excitement levels. We also made some plans using this holiday plans printable.

To remember the things we did, I thought it would be good to use the fab journal pages each day to record the things we had done, and seen. The children liked these and the three boxes helped to break down the writing involved. I wrote in a recent post about how a blank piece of paper could sometimes be a bit overwhelming. Having the three boxes was much more attractive for Daniel and Emma to write and draw in.

They did a mixture of drawing and writing to illustrate their days and it’s lovely to see the things that matter to them – mostly eating in cafes and being allowed a chocolate bar!

Each morning the children would complete the page for the day before and stick it in their blank notebooks. On the other side of the page they stuck in leaflets and tickets from the day.

The children were also keen to see how far we had travelled so we looked at this map and coloured it in, marking out Stirling, where we had stayed.

This was a really simple but effective way to help the children remember where we visited on our holidays as well as getting in some sneaky writing practice too.

Since being home we have completed a picture bank of memories using this gallery template and added it as the final page in our book.

We loved creating this book of holiday memories and it will be something we will repeat on future holidays.

It could also be used to record memories from days out or the activities you do over school holidays. Its a great way for children to record their memories.
