Ideas for an All About Me Topic

By Shelly

I was actually not planning on doing any All about Me activities with the kids but I spotted the Things That Make Me Happy Journal Page and printed it out for the kids and then the we ended up doing a few more activities and even made some plans to revisit some of the pages again in a years’ time.

After the kids had each created their list of Things That Make Me Happy, we started talking about how there were some activities that my daughter enjoys that are NOT the same activities that her brother enjoys.  And we got onto talking about how everyone is unique and have different qualities which often result in them liking different activities. So I thought it might be a good idea for each kid to think of words that describes who they were. I printed out a few copies of the Person Template (one of my favourite templates) and they started filling up the template with words that they thought best described them.

Both kids started with physical descriptive words like "brown eyes" and "long hair", but they soon started using words to describe their personality. I really enjoyed seeing the words that they chose.

My son was keen to expand on his physical characteristics so I printed out the All About Me – Physical Characteristics page for him.

He really enjoyed filling in his height and handspan and asked if we could take more measurements. So I suggested we go back to the Person Template and use that as a base for recording his different measurements. He loved the idea. We used my tape measure and started measuring different sections of his body – the length from his foot to his waist, his waist, the length from his shoulder to his fingertips, his head circumference – you really could go on and on.  And you could add in extra lines on the template to create more detail – we included a line to represent his waist but you could also indicate where there knee of elbow might be if they to include more detail.

He actually suggested that we redo this at the end of this academic year and compare how he has grown over the year. I loved his idea.

There are lots of other great pages that you could use but our other two favourites have to be this Family Tree and the Kids Passport.  Both the kids often ask us who their great grandparents are (they have only ever meet one great- grandparent) so I really liked that we could include their names on the page.

And the Kids Passport. I really like the passport! It is a great way of talking about the country that the kids live it and it can also get extended into being used for other activities. When we made our passports we included some extra blank pages with the idea that when we “travel” to new countries this year (ie – when we learn about new countries this year) we are going to add that country stamp to their passport.
