Guest Post - September Goal Setting

September is the perfect time of year for setting new goals and getting motivated! Rita and her family use some of the goal setting pages available from Activity Village to set their own goals and plan ahead.

September Goal Setting

By Rita

It’s September. The time of year where beach towels are being washed and stored away, and school books are being taken out and dusted off. The time of year where back to school sales mean cheap shiny stationary. The time of year where planning happens.

September is a great time for setting goals and getting motivated. In the spirit of this, I decided to take a look at Activity Village to see if there were any goal setting pages (Of course there were. Activity Village has pretty much everything you could want). I chose two of them, that I thought my girls might enjoy doing.

The first was a page that says, “These are some things I would like to achieve this year”. I love the fact that it has boxes, rather than lines, so that you have the freedom to write a few words, or a mini essay, or, if you are that way inclined, draw a picture.

The results were surprising, and fun, and so typical of my children’s personalities. My oldest broke her right collarbone last week, and I offered to scribe for her (she’s right-handed), but she insisted on doing it herself. So, one of her goals is to learn to write neatly with her left hand! She also wants to be more servant hearted, which is very much in keeping with her character. And I think we’ll be adding music to our curriculum this year!

One of my other children is very creative, and her goals were colourful and full of things that sum her up. She wants to achieve “a day of fruit” and “1,000,000,000 hugs”, but also to read a book she’s never read before. I’m looking forward to helping her work on her goals.

Another daughter is my big thinker. She wants to go to America, and to travel on a plane. She also did a nice little word play – she wants to “go to see (family)”, and “go to sea (on a boat)”. She had a cheeky grin when she showed me that. She also wants to “achieve a boy” – which apparently is a baby brother – I’m not feeling very inclined to help her work on that goal this year!

We also printed off a “Things that make me happy” sheet, which I want to stick up in our kitchen to remind them to be positive. We had fun with it. Here are some things that make us happy: holidays, new clothes, friends who care, family, maths, music, fruit, pom-poms, craft, and cheese. Lots of things to be thankful for!

These pages are great – I expected some of the results I got from doing these with my kids, but others game me a new insight into what they value and want to achieve. There are some other great goal setting pages up on Activity Village too – I will be using more of them through the year. Like “I’m saving up my money for” and “A way that I can help at home”.

Being able to reflect and plan is such an important group of skills, and these sheets make it easy for me to help them develop those skills.
