Summer Reading Challenge 2022

Will you be participating in the Summer Reading Challenge? You can sign up at any library for free. All the children need to do is to visit the library three times during the summer holidays and read six books. When they complete the challenge, the kids receive a medal and a certificate. This year, the theme is science and technology.

You can find out more at their website: www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk

Research consistently finds that children who enjoy reading do better in all subjects. It has also been found that reading for pleasure can reduce the symptoms of depression and improve wellbeing.

Here are some more tips to encourage children to read:

Make reading normal. Carry a book with you wherever you go and encourage your child to do the same. We've got some lovely ideas to create bookmarks so that you don’t lose your place. And we have a huge collection of printable bookmarks

Reading at the Park

Keep a reading log. Encourage your child to record the books that they read with one of our reading logs. You could print certificates to reward them for their achievements.

Become a member of your local library. Visit the library as often as you can. Many libraries have events and clubs and they are usually free. We also have some fun library themed activities

Read aloud to your child. Even if they are able to read themselves, this is something that is lovely to continue as they get older. You could read a chapter book as a bedtime story or read poetry.

Try a challenge. We have an alphabet challenge that you could try which might introduce the children to new authors and genres.

Let your child read books that they enjoy. I know that this sounds obvious but even if you think your child is choosing books that are too easy for them, it doesn’t matter. As long as they are happy and love reading, they will begin to explore when they are ready.
