A Little Geography

  • The Republic of Mali is hot, dry landlocked state in the north west of Africa, surrounded by 7 countries.
  • The river Niger Inland Delta forms West Africa’s largest wetland in Mali, and provides much needed water and fertile land for farming.
  • Bamako, the capital, is a fast growing city of over 2 million in south western Togo, on the river Niger.
  • The Great Mosque of Djenne is the biggest man-made clay structure in the world.

A Little History

  • Rock paintings show that northern Mali was settled 12,000 years ago when the Sahara was more fertile.
  • The Mali Empire was once west Africa’s largest, extending over the size of France. It was founded in 1235 CE by Sundiata who was known as the ’Lion King’’.
  • Mansa Musa, the most famous leader of the Mali Empire,  was so wealthy that he took 60,000 followers on pilgrimage to Mecca in1324 CE, accompanied by gold laden camels!
  • Mali was a French protectorate and called French Sudan from 1893 until independence in1960.

Timbuktu

  • Have you heard of Timbuktu? There used to be a saying: "That's as far away as Timbuktu!"
  • Timbuktu was established in the 11th century CE by Tuaregs, who are said to have stored goods near the river Niger with a local lady - who gave her name to the settlement.
  • Timbuktu grew into a trans-Saharan trading centre for gold and salt.
  • During the 12th century a university was established in Timbuktu, which attracted Arab and African Islamic scholars - over 25,000 of them!
  • With its rich history and 3 famous mosques, Timbuktu is now a Unesco World Heritage site.
