A Little Geography

  • A large dry land in south western Africa, Namibia is rich in diverse landscape, wildlife and natural resources.
  • Namibia has the lowest rainfall in Southern Africa and a low density of population with just 2.1m citizens.
  • The Kalahari Desert is the world's largest expanse of sand. It isn't really a desert, as seasonal rain brings flowers and grasses.
  • Namibia is a major safari destination. The Etoshi National Park covers 22,000 sq km and is home to elephants, lions, giraffe and rhinos.
  • The coastline was called The Skeleton Coast because it was littered with the rusting shipwrecks and the bones of whales.
  • Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert has the world's tallest sand dunes.
  • The Fish River Canyon, the second largest natural gorge in the world, was formed over 500 million years ago.
  • Namibia is one of the world's biggest producer of diamonds and is due to become the largest uranium exporter by 2015.

A Little History

  • Namibia was home to San bushman, whose rock paintings date back 26,000 years.
  • Overlooked by Europeans until the late 19th century, Namibia became a German colony 1884. Local tribes rebelled against colonial rule resulting in large casualties.
  • The country was captured by South Africa in World War I.
  • Independence in 1990 followed a struggle against South Africa, with whom the country continues to have a close relationship.

And Some Interesting Facts...

  • Namibia is home to the world’s largest population of free-roaming cheetahs.
  • Namibia has two kinds of sandboarding - one involves standing up, but perhaps scariest is lying down and heading down the dune headfirst at speeds of up to 80km/hr!
  • More than 40 per cent of the country is under conservation management and conservation is taken very seriously.
  • Namibia is one of only two countries in the world that has desert elephants.

The Namibian Flag

Namibia flag

The flag of Namibia was adopted in 1990, when the country became independence from South Africa. The gold sun represents life and energy. The red stripe represents Namibia's most important resource - it's people, and their determination to build a future of equal opportunity for all citizens. The white represents peace. The green stripe is for the country's agriculture and the land, while the blue is for the clear blue sky and the Atlanic Ocean.
