- The Republic of Nauru, formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island in the South Pacific.
- With under 10,000 residents, Nauru is the word's second smallest nation by population (after Vatican City).
- Originally settled by Micronesians and Polynesians, Nauru was colonised by Germany in the 19th century.
- After World War I until 1968 when it gained independence, Nauru was administered by Australia, New Zealand and the UK - although during World War II Japanese troops occupied the island.
- There are no personal taxes in Nauru, but the unemployment rate is estimated at 90%. Of those who are employed, 95% work for the government.
About the Nauru Flag
The interesting flag of Nauru has a blue background symbolising the surrounding Pacific Ocean and the clear blue sky. The yellow line represents the Equator, and the white star represents the 12 tribes of Nauru. The flag was officially adopted on January 31, 1968.
