Learn a little about Rob Roy, Scottish folk hero, and back up what you learn with our fun printables for kids.
Rob Roy, 1671-1734, was born Robert MacGregor. He lived in the Highlands of Scotland and at only 22 years old became head of the MacGregor clan. His red hair earned him the nickname "Roy" - the Gaelic word for red.
Depending on whose version of the story you believe, Rob Roy was either an educated man who fell into debt and afterwards made his living by pilfering cattle from unpopular lords and helping the poor - or he was a cattle rustler who ran a nasty protection racket in the Highlands, extorting money from other clans with the promise of keeping their cattle safe! The truth is probably somewhere in between.
Rob Roy spent some time in prison and was on the point of being transported overseas when he received a pardon from the king (George I).
