Rutherford B Hayes (1822-93) was the 19th President of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881.
Afer brave service in the American Civil War, Hayes became President in a bitterly disputed election. Hayes believed in equal treatment for all and the importance of education. He tried to reform government and bring together groups which had opposed each other in the Civil War. Though not one of the most famous Presidents, Hayes has been praised for restoring faith in the government and presidency during his term.
