The "munching method" of subtraction is perfect for when sums bridge the 10 - for example, 16 - 8 = 8. This can be very tricky for children to grasp, but of course it is a skill which they will be called on to use often in adult life. If they can master the munching method, they will be able to build on it to work out much harder subtraction problems in their heads in the future, and it also reinforces the concept of 10s and units. This printable is an explanation of the munching method that you can read through with your kids before using some of our munching method worksheets.
