Chester ArthurChester Arthur (1829-86) was the 21st President of the United States, serving from 1881 to 1885. He was Vice-President to James Garfield and became President when Garfield was assassinated.

Arthur had made a career of politics and was widely distrusted when he became President. When in office, however, he gained respect for his reforms and his attention to his duties. He became ill with a kidney disease while President and made little effort to be re-elected.
