We see illustrations of toadstools like this in stories (Alice through the Looking Glass, for example) and the red toadstool with white dots therefore seems so pretty and innocent, but these can be very poisonous indeed! So if you come across toadstools like this, avoid ... and teach the kids to avoid too!
Autumn is a good time to talk about bird migration with the kids. Swallows are particularly fascinating: our swallows migrate to South Africa for the winter, travelling at speeds of up to 22 miles per hour and covering distances of up to 200 miles a day.
Maple seeds are a treasure to be discovered on your autumn walks with the kids, with the colour so typical of autumn. Share this poster with the kids or put it in your autumn displays and ask if the children can bring in any "real" examples.
