A Little Geography:
- Tunisia is the smallest country northwest Africa. It borders Algeria to the west and southwest and Libya to the southeast. On its north and east lies the Mediterranean Sea.
- Tunisia's most northern point, Cape Angela, is the most northern point on the African continent.
- Tunisia has a population of approximately 12 million. Its capital city is Tunis.
- Until the late 20th century, oil and natural gas were Tunisia's main export. Now farming is important, with vegetables, citrus fruit, figs and olives being well suited to the climate and fertile soil.
- Arabic is the official language, but French is spoken widely.
- The Atlas Mountains lie in the east of the country and the Sahara desert in the north.
- A gentle, dry climate, blue skies and sea and many beautiful beaches make Tunisia a popular tourist destination.

A Little History:
- Tunisia has a stormy history!
- In ancient times, Tunisia was inhabited by the Berbers - an ethnic North African group. In the 12th century BC, the Phoenician's came to the country and founded Carthage.
- The Romans took control in 146 BC and occupied Tunisia for the net 800 years, introducing Christianity and leaving behind a rich collection of Roman remains.
- Tunisia was then conquered by the Muslims in 697, followed by the Ottoman Empre in the mid 16th century. After 300 years of Ottoman rule, the French colonised the country in 1881 and kept control until the Tunisian Republic was formed in 1957.
- Since 2011 the country has been a democracy, holding regular parliamentary elections. Women hold about 30% of seats, which is rare for the Arab world.

- Tunisia is the world's 4th largest olive oil producer.
- Football is the most popular sport. The national team is known as "The Eagles of Carthage".
