Chinese
Fan Craft

Fans were used in China many
thousands of years of years ago and made out of many different materials
such as silk, paper, feathers and palm leaves. (Interestingly, the folded
paper fan was actually developed in Japan and introduced to China during
the 10th or 11th Century via Korea).
You can see some examples of Chinese fans in our Chinese New Year coloring page here.
We have three different kinds of fan for you to make below:
Make a circular fan:
Print out our black and white pattern, preferably onto card stock, and
color in. Cut out the fan and attach to a lolly stick, chopstick or
similar.

Make an elegant fan with your own design:
Print out our pattern sheet, preferably onto card stock, and add your
own Chinese-inspired decoration. Again attach a lolly stick or similar as
a handle.
If you don't want to decorate the fan yourself, you could use one of
our Chinese Scrapbook Paper
Designs instead.

Make a folded fan:
Use colored construction paper, one of our
Chinese Scrapbook Paper
Designs, or bright wrapping paper to make a folded fan. Fold carefully in concertina fashion
until all the paper is used. Staple or bind the end with sticky tape.
Why not make a display of Chinese fans and lanterns?
