Ice-Breaker Games
Coping with a large group of children who you don't know can
be intimidating for an adult - and it can be very scary for the children, too.
We have listed below some good ice-breaker games which will help the kids to get
to know each other (and you to get to know them, too).
Find Your PartnerNEW!
Great for pairing up children at the beginning of a party, and for breaking the
ice when kids don't know each other well as everyone has an excuse to approach
other people and start talking.
Getting To Know You
This is an ice-breaking circle game which will help kids get to know each other
quickly.
I Like To ...
A simple memory game which helps children get to know each other and is fun to
play too.
Make A Name BookNEW!
More of a craft activity than a game, this is included because it is such a
great way for kids to get to know each other.
My Bear
For younger children, this is a game that shows children that
they are unique but also allows them to see things that they have in common.
My Favorite Things
A good game for younger children, especially shy ones!
Name Chase
This is a good game for young children who don't yet know each other's names,
based on Duck, Duck, Goose. It works particularly well when new children join a
group who already know each other.
The Name Game
This is probably my all-time favorite game, as it can be tailored for all
occasions, works with all ages, breaks the ice when people don't know each
other, and causes much merriment with the best of friends.
Who Am I?
This is a nice way of calming down a group of children as it tests not only
their powers of observation but also their ability to listen closely.
Make A Ping Pong Bat And Net
The Chinese introduced table tennis to the world and have always been extremely
good at the sport. You can make your own ping pong bats and net and have a go!
Make A Name Book
More of a craft activity than a game, this is a great way for kids to get to
know each other at the beginning of the school year.
Fishing (Tiu-u or Chinese Dominoes) This game of Chinese dominoes sounds a little complicated to
begin with but is in fact very simple to play. The name ‘fishing’ comes from
the idea that players ‘fish’ for matching dominoes. You can either print out
our dominoes or make your own more authentic version with popsicle sticks
(instructions included!)
Matching Game cards can be used to play Memory
(Concentration), Go Fish and many other card games, as well as played with
our sorting mats by one child on their own. Printable Games
