Swans
Swans are beautiful creatures - and interesting, too. Learn a little about them and enjoy our printable activities with the kids.
Swans are a large water bird, from the same family of birds as ducks and geese. They are often associated with beauty and grace, although they also have quite a temper, particularly if someone is threatening their nest!
They are one of the largest flying birds, and their wingspan can be almost 3 meters.
Baby swans are called cygnets, and don't look like their parents at all! They have short necks and dull grey feathers, and inspired Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale "The Ugly Duckling", where an ugly cygnet grows into a beautiful, graceful swan.
Fun Fact: Most swans are white, but in Australia there is a type of black swan with a red beak.
